Sorry fans, Ben Affleck’s “Batman” film is still in the beginning stages

Ben Affleck is giving us an update on the new standalone “Batman” film.

Though “Batman vs. Superman” was a box-office success, it didn’t earn the critical acclaim Warner Bros. thought it would (like the “Suicide Squad” situation).

But, many believe it was a good way to introduce Affleck as his version of the Bruce Wayne/Batman character.

We don’t know a whole lot about “The Batman” film, other than that Affleck is co-writing, directing and starring in it. The screenplay is currently still in the works, and Affleck is finally giving fans something to work with.

During a Facebook Live interview with New York Times journalist Chip McGrath, Affleck opens up about his various film roles and what attracted him to the role of Batman.

He explained that he liked the version of character they were going to use, though he was reluctant to take on the role due to his experience with “Daredevil” (we remember this train-wreck right?).

Affleck also discussed how the screenplay is going.

McGrath: “So you just mentioned that you’ve made a sequel, and there’s going to be yet another sequel, but in the meantime you’re down I believe to write, direct and star in a standalone Batman movie, is that right?”

Affleck: “That’s the idea, yeah, that’s the idea. We still have to get a screenplay and get it together-”

McGrath: “I thought you were going to write it?”

Affleck: “I am; that doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s going to be good. [laughs] I’m a real believer in not doing, not reverse engineering projects to meet a window or a date, but rather like when you get the right story or you get the right idea or you get the right thing, then you make the movie. And so that’s what we’re doing, and I’m hoping to get that done and spending a lot of time on that, but I’m also working on other stuff. And if I could, if I can find it right then there’s nothing I’d love more than to direct a standalone, you know, iconic great Batman movie.”

The actor did acknowledge the bar has been set very high from the Nolan trilogy. Affleck also mentioned he really wasn’t in a rush to “jam the mediocre movie down the pipe,” but instead wants to take his time to write and develop a great film based around the character.

So for the fans who are hoping the film will be out soon, it seems like it is still only in the writing stages. But at least fans can take comfort in knowing Affleck is taking his time with this one.
