Your Fourth of July Top Ten Films in Theatres

Speaking of the Fourth of July….

Here’s what movies topped the box office for this long weekend!

1. “Finding Dory” tops the No.1 spot for the third week in a row!

   The Disney Pixar film earned another $41.9 million in North America this weekend, adding to the success worldwide.

   According to reviews, this film is supposed to be so amazing, it could be a franchise on its own!

   Definitely a can’t miss summer movie!

2. A newcomer finds its way to the second spot this weekend, “The Legend of Tarzan.”

   This film premiered this weekend, pulling its weight by earning $38.1 million.

   The Warner Bros. blockbuster stars Alexander Skarsgard, Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson, and Margot Robbie.

   Following the 1999 Disney film, “Tarzan,” after growing accustom to the real world in London, now adult Tarzan is called back to his former home in the jungle to investigate the activities at a mining encampment.

   Reviews are mixed, most saying the film has promise, but is “overstuffed.”

3.  “The Purge: Election Year” rounds out the top 3 this weekend!

   The Universal horror flick earned $30.87 million in North America in its first weekend.

   This film is the third installment in “The Purge” series, which includes the 2013 “The Purge” starring Ethan Hawke and “The Purge: Anarchy” in 2014.

   The series is set in modern day, where the government sets one day of the year to allow all crimes to become illegal for 12-hours straight.

   Crimes including murder, robbery, destruction of public property, and more become legal.

   This installment follows former police sergeant Barnes (played by Frank Grillo), now head of security for Senator Charlie Roan (played by Elizabeth Mitchell).

   Senator Roan is a presidential candidate who wants to eliminate the Purge for good, but not everyone agrees.

   Now Roan is a target for death and it is up to Barnes to protect her during the Purge.

   Most of the reviews say that any die-hard “Purge” fan will go crazy for this film, but will not impress those who did not like the first two films.

4. Steven Spielberg‘s “The BFG” premieres at No.4 this weekend.

   The Disney film made just under $20 million in North America, unable to meet the success of “Finding Dory” and “Legend of Tarzan.”

   This film follows a young girl named Sophie  (played by Ruby Barnhill) who encounters a Big Friendly Giant (played by Mark Rylance).

   The giant looks intimidating but turns out to have a kind heart.

   He is considered to be an outcast of other giants because he refuses to do the one thing they love, eating children.

   When he got the script, he told Wired for an interview, he fell in love with the story.

   “It’s a great wise sage, but with a very innocent outlook and a very, very young girl with an old soul. I just said to myself, ‘I don’t know if I can live without this movie in my life.’”

   Though it seems like anything Spielberg touches turns to cinematic gold, critics are calling this premiere his biggest flop due to the lack of money made over the weekend.

   We shall have to see if it can climb a little higher in the coming weeks.

5. “Independence Day: Resurgence” falls three spots this weekend, earning $16.5 million.

6. Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson‘s “Central Intelligence” couldn’t keep the success going this weekend, landing in the sixth spot.

7. “The Shallows” finds itself in the seventh spot this weekend, earning just $9 million.

8. In eighth this weekend, “Free State Jones” who falls from fifth spot.

9. The horror film, “The Conjuring 2” stays a float in the top ten this weekend.

10. In the last spot this weekend, “Now You See Me 2” starring Jessie Eisenberg and Dave Franco.
